    • one can only imagine why our power plants are sold.  imagine a situation of energy crisis when energy prices shoot up to the roof.  the anger then would be directed at the power companies which are foreign.  the government could then be the "good" ones to give handouts to subsidise the increase in energy prices.

however, one would wonder, instead of selling the power plants and essentially sub-contract energy responsibilities to foreigners, why not secure the energy supplies by buying energy resources?

    • i do not trust the integrity of a good number of Singaporeans.  Even 20% of the citizens are selfish would be enough to create havoc when they are given the liberty.

as the saying goes, "The market is always right".  Judging by the stability and strength of the Singapore dollars during this global financial crisis, the market is telling us that Singapore is strong in economic as well as financial fundamentals.  Since the market is always right, that would imply those who are always on the opposite side of the market is always wrong, those who like to sing the tune that Singapore has a bleak future due to blah blah blah are wrong.

    • the tug of war between different sections of sgforums members seems never ending.  However, i feel that PAP party would continue to win Singaporeans' votes because in Singapore, we remain a proud people and PAP has become a traditional / political  methodology to arm Singaporeans with this pride.

Hence, LHL would win more than 70% votes in the next elections.

I have seen different types of Singaporeans.  There are indeed a good number of them who will take advantage of any liberty given to them such as those who stormed their own international airport in Bangkok.  A good number of them who are utterly self interest and would "sell" their country without conscience. A good number of them who will not give way to you on the highway.  Whether we like it or not, PAP scholars and ministers are a better choice.

    • But rather than offer us hope, another leading computer scientist believes these inroads in to the mind threaten oblivion.

Professor Hugo de Garis is the architect of some of the world's most complex neural networks - computers that evolve their own intelligence.

Now he is deeply conflicted over the future he is helping to create.

Prof De Garis believes that in a matter of years machine intelligence will supersede our own by a factor of millions.

These so called artilects - short for artificial intellects - will be so powerful that they will appear "almost God-like".

But Prof De Garis fears that they may not be quite so benign.

"How will they feel about us - an inferior species?" he asks before drawing a doom-filled analogy.

"...They may treat us like mosquitoes; as pests," and simply wipe us out, he says.

Horizon is broadcast on BBC Two on 24 October at 2100 BST. Or watch online after that at the Horizon website.

    • no performance, no bonus.  no bonus means 50% pay cut and not 25% pay cut.  CEO of Goldman and other US banks already announced zero bonus for themselves, that means they are taking at least 50% to 60% pay cut.

    • total wage = basic salary + bonus

since basic salary is normally 20% to 30% of the total wage and bonus is 70% to 80% of the total wage, a cut of up to 25% of the total wage means the senior management would still receive a good bonus payouts on top of their basic salary.

dont underestimate singapore's aggregate net wealth of at least half a trillion US$

    • i remember that not too long ago,  a group of forumers were quite excited about high inflation when crude oil futures was at above USD130 and talked pretty much about investing in properties to hedge against it.  If the forumers really bought properties then, they would be calculating big losses now.

similarly, with low stock market prices and all the news about how bad things are now, the herd mentality would be to sell, book in big losses, keep cash and dont spend to survive the expected big downturn.

the simple concept of buy low sell high is not so easily followed in real life because to buy seems a very difficult decision to make because we know stocks could indeed fall deeper down even as it is at low level now.  dont you agree?

    • Singapore fired all cylinders and kana attacked on all fronts.

Temasek's investments went offshore with overweight in financials.

Singapore mirrored Dubai's success by believing in the concept of "once you build it, people will come"

      Unexpectedly,

      Temasek is hit badly.

      IR in troubles.

First to crash is property prices bumped up by bullish expectations of the IR.

Second to crash is availability of jobs.

Singapore would use the traditional way to overcome job loss and boost economy. Build infrastructure for transportation, education and training etc.

No matter what, the investment dollars lost to offshore investments would nevertheless set Singapore back by a few years.

    • it saddens many of us to see T.  losing on their widely publicised investments.  Ever wondered what investment process is there in place before the investments were made.  Hopefully it is not soo-kah soo-kah based on stomach feeling type!

      Sigh.

    • good news. however, it is not easy to tell whether market has already found a long term bottom.

if you are already invested at lower levels in october 08, it is time to think about selling your shares into rally.

if you are not invested, it is prudent to remain neutral and try not to "chase" the market.

we are still in a down trend.  be careful.

    • to auntie yap, even  Lamborghini is a dog.

Italy's State Police can lay claim to having the world's coolest cop car after Lamborghini gifted them a Gallardo LP560-4.

The 203mph, 560bhp supercar replaces a standard Gallardo that the Italian police had used for four years and 87,000 miles.

Forty officers are trained to drive the four-wheel-drive supercar, the V10 machine a brilliant deterrent to speeders on the Italian motorway network.
